Prepare a social image for a chosen shape and review the crop
This tool creates one image for a selected square, portrait, vertical or landscape canvas. It centre-crops the source to the chosen proportions and resizes that area to the preset's pixel dimensions. It can prepare a post or thumbnail draft without sending the image to a social account.
A platform name is not enough to choose a canvas: a square post and a vertical cover need different compositions. The preset labels are convenient starting points. Check the intended placement's current upload requirements and preview the image in the destination application, which may crop or recompress it again.
Match the composition to the placement
| Your situation | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| A square composition with the subject near the centre | Try Instagram square, which exports 1080 × 1080. Compare both side edges of a landscape source for anything lost in the crop. |
| A taller portrait post | Try the 1080 × 1350 portrait canvas. Make sure titles and faces fit the narrower shape before committing to the export. |
| A full-height vertical image | Try Story / Reel cover at 1080 × 1920. Keep essential content clear of likely app overlays and inspect the destination's preview. |
| The subject is off-centre or text touches an edge | Adjust the source framing in Image editor first. The automatic crop is centred and provides no subject tracking, manual positioning or safe-area overlay. |
See what a square crop removes from a landscape source
The document-photo.png sample is 1200 × 800. Its wide layout makes the difference between cropping and resizing visible.
- Choose document-photo.png and select Instagram square.
- Choose JPG as Output format and inspect the square preview for clipped edge content.
- Select Make social image and confirm that Dimensions reports 1080 × 1080 pixels.
- Open the download beside the source. The retained region is the central 800 × 800 square, with 200 source pixels omitted from each side before resizing.
Expected result. The export is a square image containing the centre of the source, enlarged from 800 × 800 to 1080 × 1080. The extra pixels do not add new source detail. This checks the tool's crop and dimensions, not the destination platform's acceptance or final display.
Check the downloaded result
- Read the selected preset's pixel dimensions and aspect ratio. Similar-looking previews can represent different export sizes.
- Inspect faces, product edges, logos and complete lines of text in the actual download. A successful crop can still remove information essential to the composition.
- Check sharpness at the expected viewing size. A small source may be enlarged, especially for a large landscape or thumbnail preset.
- Preview the upload in its intended placement. Check additional cropping, circular masks, app overlays and recompression before publishing through the destination service.
Troubleshooting
- A person or logo is cut off
Centre cropping retains the middle region at the requested ratio. It does not detect the important subject or follow its position.
Try this: Prepare a better-framed source or crop it manually first. If the full scene must remain, create a padded composition in an editor instead of relying on this crop-to-fill workflow.
- The larger export looks softer than the source
The preset can upscale a smaller retained region. Interpolation increases pixel dimensions but cannot restore fine detail that was never present.
Try this: Use a larger original or choose a suitable smaller canvas elsewhere. Avoid repeatedly resizing earlier exports; work from the best available source.
- The platform changes the appearance after upload
The receiving application can apply its own crop, compression and display treatment. Those operations occur after this tool's export.
Try this: Check the platform's current placement requirements and preview. Adjust your source composition to leave appropriate space around essential content.
- There is no preset for the required dimensions
This page offers fixed canvases without custom width, height or maximum-KB fields.
Try this: Use Image editor for the desired proportions and Image resizer for exact pixels. If the receiving service has a byte limit, inspect and compress the final export separately.
Limits and compatibility
- Export controls
- The tool exports JPG or WebP using fixed-quality encoding. It does not add text, generate missing background, remove objects or provide a lossless PNG export.
- Account and publishing
- Processing is local. No social login, upload, posting, scheduling or engagement analysis happens here; this tool prepares a file for you to use elsewhere.
Your files and form values are processed on this device. Downloaded copies remain wherever you save them. See how to check local processing and our privacy policy for site data and optional services.
Common questions
- Will this guarantee that a platform accepts my image?
- No. These are fixed sizing presets. Check the current requirements for the exact placement, including file format, byte limit and content restrictions.
- Can I preserve every edge while changing the aspect ratio?
- This tool crops to fill. Keeping every edge requires padding or a different composition; prepare that in an editor before using a matching output size.
