Understand PDF content

Extract PDF text, create Markdown, select key sentences, inspect document outlines and find frequent terms using local analysis tools.

Treat extracted text as a reading aid, not an interpretation

Reviewed . How we check our guidance

These tools recover and organise information already present in a document. They do not research its subject or verify its claims. Begin by checking whether the PDF contains selectable text; a scanned page needs recognition before its wording can be analysed.

Choose between nearby tools

Full wording or a structured editing draft?

Extract PDF text creates plain text. PDF to Markdown attempts headings, lists and simple tables. Choose plain text when formatting is unnecessary; choose Markdown when you can review and correct the inferred structure against the source.

A section list or a shorter reading draft?

PDF outline exports existing bookmark titles or proposes headings from text appearance. Summarize PDF selects source sentences using local heuristics. Neither supplies a new explanation of the argument, and a short extract can omit a crucial qualification.

Frequent terms or a preview of the actual document?

Keyword analysis reports repeated terms and text statistics, not search demand, SEO rankings or semantic importance. PDF preview checks basic renderability and editing-parser compatibility; it does not certify the document’s content or safety.

Prepare review notes from a digital report

Use the two-page research-notes sample to practise the sequence, then apply it to a report you are authorised to work with. Leave OCR off when usable digital text already exists.

  1. Check the section structure

Compare the proposed outline with visible headings or the source bookmark panel. Missing headings can reflect the detector’s limits rather than missing pages.

  2. Recover the working draft

Export the same source to Markdown. Correct reading order, labels and table relationships in your text editor.

  3. Cross-check a shorter extract

Run sentence selection on the source PDF and compare each selected passage with its surrounding paragraph. Write any interpretation yourself and retain the source context.

The analysis tools each take the source PDF; one tool’s Markdown output is not an automatic input to the next. Download useful results before leaving, and keep your corrected notes separately.

Check the output before using it

  • Compare a passage from every relevant section, including its beginning and end. A reported input page count does not prove that every page contributed useful text.
  • Check table values beside their labels, multi-column reading order and negative words such as not. Fluent-looking text can still reverse a relationship or omit an exception.
  • Review OCR-page and skipped-page notices where recognition was enabled. Word counts and reading-time estimates describe the recovered text, not necessarily the complete source.

Limits and recovery

A scanned page yields little text or an empty outline
Try supported English OCR for clear writing, but do not expect it to recreate the original font hierarchy. For other languages or difficult handwriting, use an appropriate recognition tool and review manually.
A table, heading or keyword looks misleading
Return to the page layout. Reconstruct the affected relationship manually or retain the original page as the reference. Repeated terms and large type are signals, not an assessment of importance.
