Validate and preview a PDF

Validate a PDF, render its first page and inspect page thumbnails locally. The document never leaves your browser.

PDF compatibility check

Parsing, page checks and editing validation use lazy local workers. Only bounded preview canvases are created on this page.

Password-protected, damaged or over-limit PDFs are identified before editing. JavaScript inside a PDF is never executed.

Your PDF stays in this tab. No document bytes are uploaded.

Validate a PDF before editing it

The preview route checks the file envelope, parses page structure with PDF.js, renders bounded thumbnails and independently tests pdf-lib editing compatibility.

Complete the task

  1. Choose one PDF within the device's displayed file limit.
  2. Start the private parser and review page count and thumbnails.
  3. Use the compatibility result to decide whether to continue with an editing tool.
Output
Previewing does not modify the document. Embedded JavaScript is not executed and interactive annotation layers are not created.
Verify
Confirm the reported page count and inspect representative thumbnails. A preview-compatible file can still contain complex features another operation cannot preserve.
Boundary
Password-protected, damaged or page-heavy files can be rejected. Only a bounded number of thumbnails are held in memory at once.

Check whether a PDF opens before choosing an editing task

Check a PDF's page count, first page, thumbnails and basic editing compatibility before choosing a task. The file stays in your browser. Previewing does not modify or repair it.

The preview renderer and editing parser check the file separately. A document can display successfully while failing the editing check. Neither result establishes that every feature will survive a later conversion or that every page has been visually inspected.

Use the result to choose your next step

Choose an approach for your document
Your situationRecommended approach
You want to check page count and the beginning of a document.Run Validate and preview, compare the reported count with what you expect, and inspect the first-page image and available thumbnails. Use a full PDF viewer for reading every page in detail.
The result says Editing check: Passed. The editing parser opened the source and agreed with the renderer's page count. Continue to the required tool, then verify its downloaded output; this result does not certify forms, signatures, bookmarks or every editing operation.
The result says Preview only, or the file cannot open.Read the accompanying message. A renderable PDF may still be unsuitable for the editing engine. Obtain a fresh export from the source application when possible, and unlock protected documents with a known password before retrying.

Inspect the five-page sample without changing it

The sample contains page labels, title and author properties, a raster illustration and one form field. Compare this preview with the same document in a full PDF viewer.

  1. Choose device-document-lab.pdf. The initial file check is only a preliminary check; select Validate and preview to start parsing and rendering.
  2. Wait for PDF ready. Check Pages: 5 and Editing check: Passed. The displayed title should be Example project notes and the author Example author.
  3. Inspect the larger first-page image and the five page thumbnails. Compare the visible labels with the sample opened in your regular PDF viewer.
  4. Select Close preview when finished. There is no processed-PDF download for this tool; the verification record below describes our sample observations rather than a converted document.

Expected result. The page should show a five-page count, a first-page preview, five thumbnails and the sample's standard properties. Form widgets and annotation appearances are excluded from these rendered previews, so the form's saved value may not appear here.

Check the preview and compatibility result

  • Compare the reported page count with the source. Page count describes the document; thumbnail count describes only the previews generated.
  • Read the editing message as well as the preview image. A page can look normal even when the separate editing check reports limited compatibility.
  • Open the source in a suitable viewer to inspect forms, comments and later pages. The thumbnail gallery is not a replacement for checking those features at a readable size.
  • Verify any later tool's final download separately. Passing this initial check does not confirm that the intended edits were applied.

Troubleshooting

Some pages have no thumbnail.

The tool renders only the first bounded set of thumbnails to limit memory use. A larger page count can therefore exceed the thumbnail count.

Try this: Read the displayed count and use your normal PDF viewer for the remaining pages. Missing thumbnails alone do not mean those pages were removed.

A filled form or comment looks missing.

The preview deliberately disables annotation rendering and does not create interactive field layers. Saved widget appearances can be absent even though they remain in the original PDF.

Try this: Check the file in a viewer that supports those features, or inspect standard fields with Fill PDF Forms. Do not treat the preview as proof that the source lost the information.

A PDF header is found, but parsing or rendering fails.

A file can have a PDF header yet contain damaged structures, unsupported features or pages that exceed this device's resource limits.

Try this: Try a fresh copy or export from the source application. Check the displayed file and page limits; a smaller document or another current browser may help, but this tool does not repair the file.

Limits and compatibility

Limited visual inspection
Only page 1 has a larger preview, and thumbnails are reduced images rather than a searchable document view. Dynamic XFA rendering is disabled. This is not a malware scanner, accessibility audit or digital-signature validation service.
No saved document
Preview data is generated locally for this page. Closing the preview or leaving the page releases the displayed results; keep your original file for any subsequent task. Site assets can load over the network without uploading your document.

Your files and form values are processed on this device. Downloaded copies remain wherever you save them. See how to check local processing and our privacy policy for site data and optional services.

Common questions

Does Passed mean every editing tool will work?
No. It means the source opened in the editing parser and its page count matched the renderer. Operations such as filling forms or extracting images have additional requirements.
Can I print, search or download the preview as a new PDF?
This page provides a compatibility summary and preview images, not a full document viewer or PDF export. Use the original in your regular viewer or choose the appropriate conversion tool.
