Put every page in the intended reading order
Use Organize PDF when a scan or assembled document contains the right pages in the wrong sequence. Enter a complete list of source page positions and the tool copies those pages into a new PDF in that order. It does not rasterise their drawing content.
Every source page must appear exactly once. This rule helps catch accidental omissions and duplicate entries, but it does not decide what the correct sequence should be. Check page headings, scan pairs and attachments yourself before entering the new order.
Choose the right page operation
| Your situation | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| All pages are present but the sequence is wrong. | Use Organize and enter each file page position once. The numbers refer to the current source file, not necessarily the numbers printed inside its pages. |
| You need to omit pages or create a smaller extract. | Use Remove PDF Pages or Extract PDF Pages. Leaving a source page out of the Organize list is an error rather than a deletion instruction. |
| Pages are reversed, sideways or mixed with another PDF. | A descending order such as 5-1 reverses a five-page document. Rotate sideways pages separately, and merge separate PDFs before organising their combined sequence. |
Move the final sample page to the front
The sample's visible labels run from 1 to 5. Moving page 5 to the beginning demonstrates how source positions differ from the new positions after processing.
- Choose device-document-lab.pdf and select Load PDF pages. Confirm the document contains five pages.
- Replace the Page order value with 5,1,2,3,4. Include every page once and use commas between the positions.
- Select Apply page order, download the result and reopen it in a viewer.
- Read the visible page labels from beginning to end. They should now read 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, even though the viewer still counts the new file positions from 1 to 5.
Expected result. The result should contain five pages, with the original final page first and the other four following in their original relative order. Printed numbers and text are not automatically renumbered to match the new sequence.
Check the downloaded result
- Read the beginning, middle and end, checking every source page appears once. A correct page count alone cannot establish that a document is in the intended order.
- Check front/back scan pairs and any section transitions. A cover moved to the front can change which pages print together when duplex printing is used.
- Review bookmarks, internal links, comments and form behaviour. Copying pages into a new document does not guarantee that all document-level navigation or interactive structures are reconstructed.
- Compare printed page numbers and the table of contents with the new sequence. These are page content and are not rewritten by the organiser.
Troubleshooting
- The tool says every page must appear exactly once.
The list contains a missing, repeated or out-of-range position. For five pages, 5,1,2,3 omits page 4, while 5,1,2,3,3 repeats page 3.
Try this: Write out positions 1 through the reported page count and check each against your list. Use a removal or extraction tool if omitting a page is intentional.
- The right number of pages appears, but the reading order is still wrong.
Numbers in Page order identify source positions, not printed labels. Covers, unnumbered pages and Roman-numeral introductions can make the two differ.
Try this: Reopen the original, note its file positions and rebuild the order from those positions. Verify the downloaded sequence visually.
- Bookmarks or form interactions changed after reordering.
The tool creates a new document from copied pages and selected metadata. Some document-level relationships do not carry over as a complete preservation copy.
Try this: Keep the original and inspect the feature in the output. Use an editor that explicitly supports preserving that feature when it is required for the delivered document.
Limits and compatibility
- Ordering controls
- Enter comma-separated pages or ranges, including descending ranges for reversal. This interface uses a text order field rather than draggable thumbnails. It does not insert blank pages, duplicate a page or automatically interleave scan fronts and backs.
- Local processing and originals
- The document is processed on your device with the file and page limits shown at selection. Only a bounded set of thumbnails may appear. Retain the source, especially for signed documents; the reordered download is a new modified file.
Your files and form values are processed on this device. Downloaded copies remain wherever you save them. See how to check local processing and our privacy policy for site data and optional services.
Common questions
- Can I undo an order after downloading?
- You can reorder the output again using its new positions, but the tool does not remember the previous sequence. Starting from the retained original is usually easier to verify.
- Will the tool fix page numbers and a table of contents?
- No. It changes page placement, not the text on each page. Review those references separately, and add visible numbering only after the final order is settled.
