Correct page direction without making a new scan
Use rotation when a PDF contains sideways or upside-down pages. The tool changes the selected pages' rotation setting in quarter-turn steps, then saves a new PDF. It does not turn text into an image, add OCR or change the sequence of the pages.
Choose pages according to their position in the file, starting at 1. Printed page labels can differ from those positions: a cover may be file page 1 even if the first printed page number appears later. Compare the thumbnails with the source before applying a rotation to a long document.
Choose the correction the page needs
| Your situation | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| A few pages are sideways. | Enter those page positions and apply 90° or 270° clockwise. A 270° clockwise turn has the same visual result as a 90° anticlockwise turn. |
| A page is upside down. | Choose 180° clockwise. The angle is added to the page's existing rotation; it is not an absolute replacement for every page's orientation. |
| Text is only slightly tilted, or the paper size is wrong. | This tool is for quarter-turn orientation changes. It does not deskew a scan by a few degrees or convert a page to a different paper size. Use a scan-editing or resizing workflow for those tasks. |
Rotate two selected sample pages
The five-page sample starts upright. Deliberately turning two pages lets you check that the selection works before correcting a personal document.
- Choose device-document-lab.pdf and select Load PDF pages. Confirm that five pages were found.
- In Pages to rotate, replace all with 2,4. Set Clockwise rotation to 90°.
- Select Rotate selected pages, download the output and reopen it in a PDF viewer.
- Compare file pages 1 through 5. Pages 2 and 4 should turn clockwise, while pages 1, 3 and 5 should remain upright and keep their positions.
Expected result. The output should contain five pages in the original order. Only pages 2 and 4 should have an additional 90° rotation. This sample demonstrates selective rotation; your document may already contain other rotation settings.
Check the downloaded result
- Open the downloaded copy, not a viewer tab still displaying the source. Check the orientation of every selected page and one unselected page on either side.
- Inspect form fields, comments and any content close to page edges. Saving a parseable PDF does not verify every interactive feature or unusual source document.
- Check the print preview if the file is intended for paper. A viewer or printer may apply its own automatic rotation, which can make the on-screen and printed presentations differ.
Troubleshooting
- Every page rotated when I intended to change just one.
After pages load, the selection starts at all. Changing the angle alone leaves that selection unchanged.
Try this: Start again from the original, replace all with the required file page positions, and verify the selection before processing.
- The page is still sideways or now faces the other direction.
The chosen angle is added to any existing rotation. Scanned pixels can also already be sideways independently of the PDF's rotation setting.
Try this: Judge the visual result. Return to the original and choose the appropriate 90°, 180° or 270° correction rather than repeatedly guessing on successive downloads.
- A page range is rejected.
Selection accepts all, individual numbers or ascending ranges within the document. Printed labels and descending ranges are not valid selection instructions here.
Try this: Use file positions such as 1,3,5 or 2-4. Confirm the reported page count and remove page numbers that are outside it.
Limits and compatibility
- Orientation, not reconstruction
- The page rotation setting changes while the underlying page content and boxes remain. This does not repair damaged scans, remove blank margins or permanently change the direction of pixels inside an embedded image.
- Local copies and compatibility
- Processing runs in your browser and leaves the original selected file untouched. The device's file, page and thumbnail limits apply. Unlock protected inputs with permission first, and retain signed originals because the saved output is a modified copy.
Your files and form values are processed on this device. Downloaded copies remain wherever you save them. See how to check local processing and our privacy policy for site data and optional services.
Common questions
- Can I rotate different pages in different directions?
- One operation uses one angle for the selected pages. Make a second pass for another group if needed, keeping the original and checking both groups in the final copy.
- Why do I see fewer thumbnails than the page count?
- The preview count is capped to limit browser memory use. Page selection can still refer to the full reported document, so inspect unpreviewed pages in your own viewer before choosing their numbers.
