Fit a PDF to the paper your recipient needs
Use page resizing when a PDF needs consistent A4, US Letter or US Legal sheets. Each source page is fitted proportionally inside a new page, centred within the chosen margin. A mixed-size document therefore becomes a set of sheets with the same dimensions and orientation.
The operation scales existing page content; it does not reflow paragraphs, rewrite line breaks or sharpen a low-resolution scan. Different source and target shapes produce extra blank space. Choosing a larger page can enlarge the content, while choosing a smaller usable area reduces it.
Separate paper size from other changes
| Your situation | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| An application asks for A4 or Letter pages. | Choose the requested Page size and Orientation, then check the downloaded page dimensions in a viewer. Use an appropriate margin and inspect the smallest text after scaling. |
| You only want to remove blank edges or make a smaller download. | Use a crop or compression workflow for that purpose. Resizing adds a new paper-sized canvas and is not a guarantee of fewer bytes or tighter page edges. |
| You need several original pages on each printed sheet. | Use N-up PDF. Resizing keeps one output page for every source page, even when the content would fit several times on the selected paper. |
Place five A4 pages on landscape Letter sheets
The downloadable sample has five A4 pages. Converting it to a different paper shape makes the proportional fit and blank space easy to inspect.
- Choose device-document-lab.pdf. Set Page size to US Letter and Orientation to Landscape.
- Set Margin (mm) to 8, then select Resize PDF pages and download the result. The margin setting applies around each new sheet.
- Open the download and inspect its page size: landscape Letter is 11 × 8.5 inches, or 792 × 612 PDF points.
- Compare the numbered page content with the source. Check that it is centred and proportionally scaled, and look specifically at the sample's form area before deciding whether this operation suits a form document.
Expected result. The result should have five landscape Letter pages. The portrait A4 content fits inside the available area without being stretched to fill the sheet; additional blank space around it is expected.
Check the downloaded result
- Inspect the downloaded page dimensions, orientation and total count. Viewing the document at Fit page does not tell you its physical paper size.
- Compare all four edges, small print and any pages that were rotated or cropped in the source. These PDFs need particular attention because rebuilding page content may not reproduce every display setting.
- Check links, comments and filled forms separately. Interactive annotations are not carried into the new page layout; their appearance may be missing as well as their interactivity.
- Print one page using the intended printer settings. A second Fit to page operation in the print dialog can change the scale again, so check the preview and any required physical measurements.
Troubleshooting
- The page has wider blank bands than the margin I entered.
The margin defines the available box, not a promise that content touches every side. Proportional fitting leaves extra space when the source and target have different shapes.
Try this: Choose an orientation closer to the source shape or reduce the margin. Use cropping separately only if removing source page area is actually intended.
- A form value, comment or clickable link disappeared.
The tool embeds source page content on new sheets rather than transferring interactive annotations and form fields.
Try this: Keep the original. If a fixed visual copy is acceptable, flatten a saved source first, verify all appearances, and resize that copy. Retain the original workflow when editable fields are required.
- Small text or scanned details are hard to read.
Fitting to a smaller box reduces the reading size. Existing raster images have a fixed amount of detail even when placed on larger paper.
Try this: Use a smaller margin or a more suitable paper orientation, or obtain a higher-quality source. Compare the output at its intended print size.
Limits and compatibility
- Available layout controls
- The tool provides A4, US Letter and US Legal in Portrait or Landscape, with a 0–50 mm margin. It applies the same settings to every page. It does not provide custom dimensions, selective resizing or automatic content rotation.
- Preservation and local processing
- The new PDF embeds page content without rasterising it, but it is not a full preservation copy of document-level features. Processing stays in the browser, and password protection and device limits must be resolved before conversion.
Your files and form values are processed on this device. Downloaded copies remain wherever you save them. See how to check local processing and our privacy policy for site data and optional services.
Common questions
- Will changing Portrait to Landscape turn the text sideways?
- The setting changes the target sheet shape. It does not deliberately rotate each page's content; inspect rotated source PDFs carefully before using the download.
- Does resizing make the PDF smaller in megabytes?
- Not necessarily. Paper dimensions and file size are different. Existing image data is not automatically recompressed just because it is drawn smaller on the page.
