Make readable handouts with several pages per sheet
N-up layout places several original PDF pages on one new sheet. It is useful for slide handouts, reference packs and contact-sheet style review copies. Choose 2, 4, 6 or 9 pages per sheet, then select the destination paper size, orientation and margin.
Pages stay in their original sequence and fill the grid from left to right, then top to bottom. The tool scales each page proportionally to fit its cell; it does not crop pages to fill the cells or turn this reading-order layout into a booklet.
Choose a layout people can still read
| Your situation | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| Your source has dense paragraphs or small diagram labels. | Start with 2 pages per sheet and compare a printed sample. A higher page count saves sheets but reduces text size. Do not choose a grid solely from its screen preview at high zoom. |
| Your source has large slide titles and sparse content. | Try 4 pages per sheet. The fixed grids are 2 columns by 1 row for 2 pages, 2 by 2 for 4, 3 by 2 for 6, and 3 by 3 for 9. |
| You want a folded booklet or a different reading order. | Use dedicated booklet-imposition software for folding and binding. To change the sequence of an ordinary handout, organise the source pages before creating the N-up layout. |
Turn the five-page sample into two handout sheets
The numbered sample makes it easy to verify placement and the partly filled final sheet. Use this exercise before arranging a longer document.
- Choose device-document-lab.pdf. Set Page size to A4, Orientation to Portrait, Margin (mm) to 8, and Pages per sheet to 4 pages. These are the initial layout settings.
- Select Create sheet layout, then download and open the new PDF.
- Read sheet one from top-left to top-right, then bottom-left to bottom-right. The visible source page numbers should be 1, 2, 3 and 4.
- Check sheet two: source page 5 should occupy the top-left cell, with the other cells blank. Print one sheet using one output PDF page per physical sheet.
Expected result. The result should report five input pages and two output pages. The output-page count is the source count divided by the selected pages per sheet, rounded up. Blank cells on the final sheet are expected.
Check the downloaded result
- Follow source page numbers through every output sheet. The tool uses the current source sequence, so misplaced source pages stay misplaced in the handout.
- Read the smallest labels at the intended printed size. Check both ordinary text and any scanned images, which can become unreadable when reduced.
- Compare forms, comments and rotated or cropped pages with the original. The new layout embeds page content; it does not preserve interactive annotations and may not reproduce their visible appearances.
- Check the print dialog before printing the full pack. Applying another multiple-pages-per-sheet setting to an already arranged PDF makes the content smaller again.
Troubleshooting
- The last sheet looks mostly empty.
There are fewer source pages remaining than available cells. The tool retains the same grid and starts at the top-left rather than enlarging or centring the final page.
Try this: Confirm that no source pages are missing. Accept the blank cells, or choose another page count per sheet if that better suits the document.
- The output is too small to read.
More pages per sheet and larger margins reduce each page's available area. A mismatch between source orientation and cell shape can leave additional unused space.
Try this: Return to the original and try 2 or 4 pages per sheet, a smaller margin, or a different sheet orientation. Print one representative sheet to judge the result.
- A form value or annotation is missing from the handout.
Embedding a page's content does not transfer its form widgets, comments or other interactive annotations into the new sheet.
Try this: If you need a fixed visual handout, flatten the saved source first and verify its contents before arranging it. Keep the editable original separately.
Limits and compatibility
- Layout behaviour
- A4, US Letter and US Legal are available in either orientation. Margin accepts 0–50 mm and the tool inserts a small automatic gap between cells. There is no separate gutter, booklet, reverse-order or automatic page-rotation control.
- Output and privacy
- The page layout is created in your browser without uploading the source PDF. Original page content is embedded without rasterising it, but document-level navigation and interactive features are not preserved as a full copy. Keep your source for editing and reuse.
Your files and form values are processed on this device. Downloaded copies remain wherever you save them. See how to check local processing and our privacy policy for site data and optional services.
Common questions
- Can I make an N-up file from several different PDFs?
- This tool accepts one PDF at a time. Merge the files into the required order first, check the combined document, then create the handout.
- Does this set up double-sided printing?
- No. It creates PDF sheets in reading order. Select duplex printing and the appropriate binding edge in your printer dialog, then test a pair of sheets before printing a pack.
